Roundtable: Tackling the Tough Cloud Integration Issues (Toronto)
On October 8, 2015, The IT Media Group brought together 17 IT executives from a variety of private and public-sector organizations in the Toronto area for a roundtable called “Tackling the Tough Cloud Integration Issues”. Sponsor for this CIO Master Series Roundtable was Salesforce, represented at the table by Chris Makkreel, Head of Solution Engineering.
As Cloud evolves, some enterprise systems may reside with one or more Cloud vendors while others remain on premises. Though not fully in control of all of these systems, CIOs will have to manage them as if they were a single computing environment. That will be a tall order, especially as hybrid environments expand and integration issues grow more complex.
This roundtable explored the challenges CIOs are facing with Cloud integration and delved into strategies for ensuring the integrity, accessibility, security and manageability of data in a hybrid environment.
The discussion encompassed some of the barriers still prevalent in the minds of many participants – compliance and security heading the list. However, most were either significantly invested in Cloud or committed to it as a near-term option for all but those applications dealing with the most sensitive data. Contract management and service levels occupied a good portion of the debate touching on legal issues, procurement and cyber insurance.
You can view the discussion of these and many other key discussion points in the highlight videos below.
Chris Makkreel added many valuable insights to the conversation, sharing his knowledge of customer experiences and articulating Salesforce’s value proposition as a leading integrated Cloud platform provider in a manner consistent with the informative nature of the conversation.
Session Highlights Videos
Security and the Cloud
It's not a question of if, but when we move to the Cloud. Security concerns remain, however, for highly critical data.
Cloud Standards and Compliance
There's a need to get into nitty-gritty details of vendors' implementations. Standard contracts can fall short of Canadian requirements.
Shadow IT as a Service
Many CIOs are embracing Shadow IT by providing service and support while ensuring users operate within an approved governance framework.

Having an AI advisor that provides recommendations based on your direction can be helpful. But an expert actor that can make decisions and operate with minimal human intervention is even more powerful.
Insights from Nasheen Liu on the AI Future Leaders Podcast.
AI is no longer experimental. It’s operational. It’s funded. And it’s expected to deliver. Yet a new global study from Hitachi Vantara reveals a hard truth many CIOs already suspect: AI success is being limited not by algorithms, but by data infrastructure.
Cyber incidents are no longer isolated IT events. They are enterprise-level crises that can halt operations, trigger regulatory scrutiny and erode customer trust overnight. Yet too often, planning for how to respond is treated as a compliance checkbox or delegated piecemeal across functions.
Having an AI advisor that provides recommendations based on your direction can be helpful. But an expert actor that can make decisions and work without oversight is even more powerful.
Artificial Intelligence is no longer a buzzword; it's a daily boardroom reality. CIOs are tasked not only with adopting AI but also with translating their "AI promise" into operational and financial value. However, despite board-level urgency and growing enterprise investments, many AI programs still fail to deliver—not due to lack of ambition, but because of a strategic value gap.
AI is transforming industries at warp speed, with companies across sectors driven by its potential to accelerate revenue growth, boost operational efficiency and customize customer experiences.
