CIOs – more than just efficiency experts

A lot of CIOs struggle with the fact that they are pigeon-holed by their organizations as efficiency experts whose role is primarily one of improving processes. The notion of IT being a key driver of business growth in new areas simply doesn’t exist in many companies.
For CIOs trying to make the case for an expanded role for IT in driving business growth, some good news came recently in the form of a survey from Juniper Networks, which provides some tangible evidence that when IT is enlisted to drive corporate growth, the result is stronger business performance.
Conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit, the survey of 474 business and IT executives from Germany, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. aimed at providing a better understanding of how the role of IT in business is changing to address the challenges and opportunities of exponential data growth and the fast-changing market needs for digital services.
Fully 20 percent more respondents from high-performing companies – those that report their financial performance is stronger than their industry peers – said that technology played a very strong role in their organization's financial performance; 11 percent more from this group strongly agreed that the IT function can support business growth by identifying new market opportunities; and 8 percent more from this group said that the IT function is very closely involved in helping develop new products and services.
While the high performers are leading the pack (as usual) when it comes to the strategic use of IT, there was an across-the-board recognition that IT will play a more vital role in business growth in the future. A whopping 60 percent of respondents said IT will very closely or somewhat closely be involved in helping to develop new products or services for the company over the next three years.
That poses a problem for the many CIOs in companies that have not yet recognized the increasingly vital role of IT in business growth. And it will be critical for those CIOs to somehow find a way to lift the veil from senior management’s eyes on this issue.
There are two key ways of doing this, and it will be important for the CIO to become proficient at both.
First, the CIO must figure out new and innovative ways of driving business value, and ensure that such initiatives – no matter how modest in the beginning – are incorporated into the IT strategic plan. Only by demonstrating the ability of IT to drive business growth will IT earn the right to an expanded role in this regard.
Second, the CIO must do some serious internal spadework to elevate the perceived value of IT to the business. In researching The IT Media Group’s new whitepaper on how CIOs are marketing IT to the business, I discovered that IT executives are all over the map on this issue. To many, the notion of marketing IT is pretty much a foreign concept. Beyond their own personal interactions with senior management and perhaps the occasional lunch and learn or newsletter blast, they don’t do much that could in any way be described as marketing. A fair number use marketing techniques in limited fashion, employing a variety of communication techniques to get their message across. And a small but passionate group or CIOs believe it is critical for IT to market itself to the business, and they have undertaken extraordinary steps to ensure that IT’s message is heard loud and clear by everyone from the CEO to the lowest level end user.
For those CIOs that haven’t thought much about marketing, the time may be right to step up your game. (A good starting point will be by reading our whitepaper when we post it to our site in January.) Exponential data growth and fast-changing needs for digital services will have a huge impact on the way companies do business. If you’re not getting the message out that IT can be a tremendous strategic tool to meet these changing needs, you may be an efficiency expert in search of a job.
